ORIGIN & FUNCTIONS

[photo, House Office Building, 6 Bladen St. (from College Ave.), Annapolis, Maryland] Functions of the Economic Matters Committee trace to the Committee on Accounts formed in 1692. That committee was renamed the Committee on Claims (upon the Treasury) in the 1770s and continued as the Claims Committee from 1776 to 1968. It reformed as the Economic Matters Committee in 1968. Its budgetary and certain other duties transferred to the Appropriations Committee in 1971.

The Economic Matters Committee considers legislation relating to alcoholic beverages; banks and other financial institutions; business occupations and professions; business regulation; commerce; commercial law, including consumer protection; corporations and associations; economic development; electronic commerce; insurance regulation (except health insurance); labor and employment; property and casualty insurance; unemployment insurance; utilities regulation; and workers' compensation.
